This flute would be great for someone LARPing a bard but who doesn't necessarily have an lot of musical experience. You will need to be able to play a side-blown flute, or to learn, which isn't too hard. If this is your first time, you probably won't sound very good at first, but give your lungs time to get stronger and you'll sound cooler and cooler. This flute has a unique scale. When you are playing in the lower octave, it sounds low and rich and very whimsical, which is why I picked the name River Flute. The lower notes sound like a lazy summer afternoon spent by a slow-moving river. When you switch to the second octave though, it suddenly turns into this ridiculously haunting, intriguing tone and is kind of unsettling. You don't necessarily need to know how to make music to sound cool on this, or to at least sound like you
are
in fact making music. The more discipline you have and the more practice you put in, obviously the better you will sound. This is a very unique low flute and it will really make your bard character stand out. If you play a drunkard who just likes to lay around and be whimsical all the time, the low notes are fantastic. But then if they sober up when night falls, or if it's a campfire night and you want to turn the tone of the evening creepy, hit the second octave and have a great time!
I have sound clips up on a tumblr blog, so just let me know if you need the link so you can listen before purchasing, but please know that I will not be selling off of eBay -- am selling on eBay only, for your protection and for mine.
This flute is made of PVC so it should be able to withstand the rigors of larp, significant temperature changes, humidity changes, et cetera. You should take the cap off and let it air-dry at night when the gaming is done for the day to avoid letting mold grow in there, and wash it out with soap and water when you get home, then let it dry again. I mean okay, you don't
need
to do that stuff, but it would be the smartest thing to do, since blowing a flute always creates a lot of condensation inside and your lungs are important!
It has been spraypainted, and the paint is a little rough and damaged in places. I tried to give it a weathered, unique, magical sort of look, but you might want to repaint it if you want it to look like the whole thing is metal, or to give it a special color. If you sand it to repaint it, just take it down to the greenish-blue color, because that is a primer designed for plastic, and it should be worth leaving on there.
Note on sustainability -- It's made out of old PVC pipe recovered from a drainage system in a backyard--no sewage!--so even though it's plastic, you don't need to feel bad about it being plastic since most of this flute is made of repurposed or reclaimed material. I got my spraypaints from someone who was doing a garage clean-out and sold me all their paint, so this is a fairly eco friendly project, at least in terms of very few new resources going into it. The only new part is the plastic end cap.
Note on pictures -- My camera decided to make the pictures come out super dark, I think because of the white railing, so I had to touch the colors up and brighten the pictures. The flute's base color is a sort of bright alpine-lake color of greenish blue, with random sprays of copper over it. There are some places where the paint was messed up, as the pictures should show, but it's still a lovely, interesting looking instrument.
