Description
Triassic Cycad Replaced by Copper Minerals, Lost Lake Claim, Nacimiento Mine, Cuba, New Mexico. I owned this claim until July, 2020 and still have a lot of inventory. The wood is mostly replaced by chalcocite (CU2S) which is 90% copper by weight. The arkose sandstone in which the wood in encased is usually stained with malachite and, at times, azurite. The black mineral is tenorite. It appears to be coal, but is not -- if you heat it with a butane torch, it does not burn and turns a copper color.
This is a large piece of chalcocite with a thin skin of malachite stained matrix and some tenorite. I cut an end off to demonstrate the metallic shine of the chalcocite. Don't mistake the saw marks for growth rings. 4 inches at widest. Over 2 pounds. Shipped in a USPS flat rate box. wood7.1
I will combine shipping when specimen safety can be guaranteed which is much of the time.
